International Women’s Day Celebrations at NUST

NUST celebrated International Women’s day in collaboration with Kashf foundation and Canadian Embassy, on March 7, 2014. Noted guests included Maria Wasti, cast of drama serial ‘Rehaai’, writer Farhat Ishtiaq known for her famous novel Humsafar and the chairwoman of The National Commission on the Status of Women, Ms. Khawar.

The proceeding focused on the struggle of women in Pakistan and their achievements without regard to cultural, economic, or divisional background. It also highlighted the participation of women in the current socio economic position of the country and the efforts to eliminate gender discrimination.

The MD of Kash Foundation, Roshaneh Zafar welcomed the guests and the honorary High Commissioner, which was later followed by the screening of the drama serial “Rehai”. The drama serial spotlighted the struggle of working women and the domestic violence they have to face in Pakistan.

Clients of Kashf Foundation, Ms. Khalida, and Ms. Asma Batool shared their success stories and discussed the problems they faced in their ordeal. The panel discussion with the crew followed which laid emphasis on the matter that women need to empower themselves through education and start taking responsibility instead of being a liability to family members or the society as a whole. The role of evolution of media and its portrayal of women that has led the society as a body to question injustice around them was also widely conferred. Education and entertainment were looked upon as two sides of the same coin through which a change in the society can be brought.

The closing remarks of Chief Guest - Canadian High Commissioner - Greg Giokas and Rector NUST, Engr Muhamad Asghar appreciated the participation of women not only in Pakistan but globally, and the opportunities that await the future generation of women.
