NUST Summer School on Artificial Intelligence is the talk of the town this summer, with kids and teenagers lining up to learn how intelligent systems work. The second session of the NUST Summer School on AI started at the NUST Islamabad campus today, with 16 participants in the 10-14 years age group and 31 in the 15-19 years age bracket.
The participants are practicing with Lego Mindstorm kits, programming their bots, and are coming up with their own innovative ideas. Competitions take place at the end of every day, making the exercise more interesting for the participants. The course content further includes learning programming using Scratch – an MIT-developed modular programming environment designed to teach programming to kids. The participants are also learning Python programming, which is an actual environment used to build large-scale AI systems. One day of the camp is termed ‘day with a researcher’ where participants visit various AI-centric labs in NUST School of Electrical Engineering (SEECS) and NUST School of Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering (SMME), and interact with professors and research students.
The AI Summer School started at NUST’s Islamabad campus on June 17, and so far 1 session each for ages 10-14 and 15-19 years has been concluded – 55 kids and teenagers had a whale of a time, learning how computers emulate the human brain. Registrations for the third session, are still open.
4 seats in each session are reserved for children from underprivileged community schools at very nominal fee of PKR 500/ only.
