Director of NUST Medical Devices Development Centre (MDDC), Dr Murtaza Najabat Ali, along with Executive Director Rawalpindi Institute of Cardiology (RIC) and Chairman National Interventional Cardiology Board (NICB) Maj Gen (Retd) Dr Azhar Mehmood Kayani, visited the Animal Centre at American Heart of Poland (AHP) in Kostkowice, Poland, in June 2019. The purpose of the visit was to ascertain results of animal trials of cardiac stents produced by NUST MDDC, which were implanted in animals at the Centre – the cardiac stents include DESPAK® Drug Eluting Stents (DES) and REJUVENATE® Bare Metal Stents (BMS).
90% of DESPAK® DES were implanted into large animals one month ago, whereas during their June visit, the delegation witnessed implantation of DESPAK® stents in one animal. The cardiologists at AHP, Poland, shared that results of the implanted DESPAK® stents after a one-month follow-up were very promising. Likewise, they said that the results of animal trials of REJUVENATE® BMS were also very encouraging after a 4-month (120 days) follow-up. As per the AHP cardiologists, the stents have met their safety and performance standards and can now be implanted in humans.
