Walk and Cycling Rally at NUST

NUST, in collaboration with Pakistan Sustainable Transport (PAKSTRAN) Project, organized a walk and cycling rally on ‘Better Transport, Let’s Breathe Fresh!’ at the University Main Campus on November 11, 2014.

The event focused on the awareness of sustainable transport among the youth and students. Participants included representatives from the Ministry of Water & Power, Government of Pakistan, International Union of Conservation and Nature (IUCN) and NUST. Over 350 participants covered the predetermined route with various slogans for clean air and the promotion of sustainable transport. The walk was followed by a cycling activity.

Mr. Hasan Zaman, Communications Officer, Pakistan Sustainable Transport (PAKSTRAN) Project, gave an overview on the need for sustainable transport in Pakistan and issues faced by the transport sector. He also highlighted the vital role that students and the youth play in promoting sustainable urban transport.

PAKSTRAN is supported by Global Environment Facility (GEF) and United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and is being implemented by the Ministry of Communications, Government of Pakistan, through the offices of the Government of Sindh (Transport Department), Government of Punjab (Urban Unit, Planning and Development Department), and IUCN, with the objective ‘to reduce the growth of energy consumption and related greenhouse gas emissions from Pakistan’s transport sector, while simultaneously improving urban environmental conditions and improving Pakistan’s competitiveness.’
